Do You Know the Way

Today at the bar wasn't too bad. I only worked for about 5 hours. Only one guy grabbed my ass today, so that's an improvement. The crowd was starting to come in as I was leaving. My dad asked me to stay a little longer. I told him that I needed to go get some rest.

When I arrived home my mother was sitting in her chair crocheting. "Hi mommy, what are you making over there?"

"Just a little hat for one of my church sisters grandson. How was work today? Did you daddy finally calm down? I don't know why he always uses those kinds of words when talking to you."

"Work was good. You know that dad acts like everything is perfect in public. But I need to get out of here for a while. I will still come by to check on you everyday, but I just can't stay around him. He told me that I should be with King. If I stay here, either I'm going to hurt him or myself."

My mom just sat there and the pain on her face made me feel very small. She really wants us to be a normal family. But after what my dad did to me growing up, I don't think there is a path forward that allows us to be cordial.

She said, "I understand. Your father is a very intense man. I'm sorry for the way he spoke to you earlier. And I do believe that you just fell asleep at your friends house. He's just worried about what people will say about us and about you. He does love you and I know he feels bad. It's not in him to come out and apologize, but trust me, he feels sorry for speaking to you that way earlier today. I hope you reconsider and stay here with your family. If not, let me know what we can do to help you get your own place."

Although she means well, she doesn't understand my father's anger towards me. If I let them help me get a place, then that gives him the right to pop up whenever he wants to and control my home. I am not living under those conditions.

"Mom, I'm going to talk to Ricky tonight about staying with him for a few days. Just until I can find something on my own. If he doesn't let me, then I'll just stay in a hotel for a week."

I gave her a hug and a kiss on the cheek. I asked her if she needed anything. She said no and I went into my room to grab my things. My things consisted of a duffle bag and hair dryer. I called Ricky and told him I was on my way over.

Do I really want to stay at Ricky's house? We still haven't cleared the air to my satisfaction. I know that he said we were all good, but how can that be? I've talked to many people who told me he was a train wreck over the years.
